semen collection & Evaluation

Semen evaluation may be indicated before male is used for the first time, for assessment of studs with fertility problems, for artificial insemination and semen shipping or freezing. Sometimes semen or prostatic fluid sample is needed as a diagnostic test for cytology and bacterial culture.

For almost all males, presence of a teaser bitch in heat can greatly improve the quality of ejaculate collected. If you do not have your own teaser, please call the clinic for teaser availability: at certain times we have in-house teaser bitches provided by our staff or our teaser program.

Once the semen has been collected, we will complete a full evaluation, which at Graham Animal Hospital includes total sperm cell count, total and progressive motility and full morphology with descriptions of observed abnormalities of the head, midpiece and tail. For dogs with fertility problems, this is often a helpful first step in diagnosing what the issue may be.

You will receive a written report of full semen evaluation.
